Overview #
Hampton are firmly rooted to the bottom of the form table with ten defeats in the last eleven outings. Being almost certainly safe from relegation though, the season has fizzled out… but what better way to take your mind off those spring blues than with a trip to the seaside on what should, according to BBC Weather, be a mostly sunny day with a light breeze? It’s a 3pm kick-off at Worthing’s Woodside Road ground, Hampton will look forward to welcoming Max Merrick and Mauro Vilhete back into the squad, both players return from international duty with England Under 20s and São Tomé and Príncipe respectively. Worthing have had a wobble in form of their own this week – they surprisingly lost to relegation-threatened Welling United last weekend and compounded their misery with a defeat at home to Hornchurch on Tuesday night. They’re still top of the league going into Saturday’s contest, but Truro, Eastbourne, and the rest of the chasing pack are breathing down their neck – it’s a crucial game for them.

Pubs #
Woodside Road is located in a residential area, however, the main town and seafront is a short walk away. Heading out of Worthing Station and along Teville Road then south along North Street, you’ll find the New Amsterdam tucked away on High St. This place is a modern studenty/trendy bar that opens at midday, it boasts two food pop-ups: a dough-pizza place and a smoke house. Just across from the New Amsterdam is The Corner House, a free house a superbly kept garden with heated booths & multiple seating areas which tries to only serve local Sussex drinks. Continuing southwards towards the seafront, The Cow & Oak on Brighton Road opened its doors in 2018 and is another of Worthing’s many independent pubs, it mixes traditional Sunday roasts and real ale with a contemporary feel. Heading in the opposite direction, The Three Fishes on Chapel Road is the local JD Wetherspoon and is centrally located. A final highlight is the Beach House, which is located on Worthing’s iconic promenade and is primarily an eatery with great sea views. Worthing, with its strong independent pub scene, is one of the best towns in the division for a pub crawl and you’ll find plenty of other bars dotted around the town too.
Culture #
If drinking isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other activities to keep you entertained before the match. In 2019, Worthing’s Art Deco Pier was dubbed the best in Britain, so you’ll want to head to the seafront and explore that. Worthing is home to one of the countries oldest cinemas, The Dome, an Edwardian building which opened as a cinema in 1911 and is still going strong. The Worthing Museum & Art Gallery hosts one of the most significant costume collections in the UK - built in 1908 as the town’s museum and library, it is expected to undergo a major redevelopment in 2020.
Fun Facts #
Worthing are one of two sides in the National League South known as the Rebels (the other being Slough Town). The nickname stems from the club’s resignation from the West Sussex League in 1920 in protest at a rule change. Before that the club’s nickname was the Mackerel Men, and the fish still feature on the club crest to this day. Woodside Road has been home to the club since before Hampton even existed, Worthing have played there since 1901!
Safe travels to all Beavers and see you on the beach or at Woodside Road!
